This course enables students to work on projects in any media genre or format in the areas of journalism, graphic design, media production (video, television, radio and/or audio production), multimedia, advertising, public relations and/or corporate communications. The Students develop the basic skills required to generate original concepts and ideas, do research, and write proposals related to their projects (synopses, treatments, scripts). They explore techniques to manage, plan and schedule their projects efficiently. In addition, the students take specialized technical workshops related to the media projects undertaken.
Higher Colleges
COMA 206 – Narrative, Genre, Style
In this course students learn how to structure stories for a variety of media genres and forms. The students explore theories of narrative genre through the examination of shape, color, lighting, movement and editing, across a range of media. They analyze how to communicate messages and tell stories in meaningful ways. The students consider how the digital transformation of words, images and sounds expand the relationships between forms of media. The students engage in critical investigations of the ways in which narrative, generic and stylistic choices impact the writing, design and production of media.
COMA 175 – Graphic Design II
The aim of this course is to continue to build students’ confidence and ability in visual problem solving. Students continue to apply the fundamental principles required to produce effective design solutions while learning more sophisticated design solutions such as the grid and how to critique work based on the principles; they also learn more about color management in print and electronic mediums. Students gain an understanding of the appropriate software required for both for print and digital media design.
COMA 115 – Media Production I
Students will produce a short sound production demonstrating the correct use of a mixing board in a live environment. They will identify the various microphone types and use the correct microphone according the microphone properties and the recording situation. They will play back and mix sound from at least 2 digital or analogue, microphone and/or line sources. They will master record the mix to an appropriate media. Students will individually record a single camera interview to include camera, tripod, sound and lighting setup and operation to an industry level using professional equipment. They will identify the various parts in a tripod and demonstrate the proper set up and take down of a tripod. They will identify the various controls in a camera and demonstrate their proper use by operating the camera in a variety of shooting situations. They will again identify the various microphone types and use the correct microphone according the microphone properties and the recording situation. Students will identify different lights and correctly use/apply them according to their properties and the recording situation. Students will identify the various cables used for video, audio and power connections and demonstrate how to use them in a safe manner. Students will then edit their shot material on Final Cut Pro demonstrating a basic understanding of the non-linear editing system and its basic functions. The students will be expected to deliver their edited piece onto Mini DV, CD and DVD. Students will conduct themselves in a professional manner, show a willingness to share ideas, cooperate, and support their classmates, organize and prioritize their time, meet deadlines, participate willingly in a team, accept constructive criticism, work independently when needed, and assume responsibility for their actions and conduct both on campus and off while producing materials for this course. This course will be taught as a combination of theory and practice. It wi ll use relevant resource materials in print, web and CD ROM form, as well as practical workshops and project based learning with the available equipment at each college.
COMA 359 – Multimedia II
This course builds on the introductory level knowledge gained through COMA 309 – Introduction to Multimedia. Students will demonstrate a level of understanding of the design process for multimedia that enables them to work through the development stages with a degree of independence. They will demonstrate a level of understanding that shows they have understood the needs of the audience and the purpose and context of the resource. Further skills will be developed in the use of multimedia authoring software.
COMA 357 – Graphic Art Workshop
Student put their design and production skills and talents to work on variety of on and off campus ‘clients’ projects. Whenever possible, students will work on individual projects. The Course will be supervised by instructor who will act individual ‘Art Director’. Units and Course Goals from COMA 0353, 0354 and 0356 will be covered in this course unit. Portfolio Evaluation marks will reflect named units.
COMA 353 – Graphic Design II
A more advanced unit that looks at the design process through a series of exercises that explores visual rhythm and space awareness, methods and critical self and peer evaluation of design work. The main aim of this unit is to further develop the student creative ability to solve visual design problems and produce answers in a variety of medium and materials. Students work on projects that are mostly industry driven to help them adopt and learn a real-world philosophy with regards to client liaison, presentations and time management. This will be taught and integrated with COMA 0353, 0354, 0356 and 0357. The Course goals identified in the programs inter- relate with each other.
COMA 309 – Intro to Multimedia
An introductory course in which the use of multimedia as a communication, entertainment and learning tool is analyzed. The students will demonstrate an understanding of the Multimedia development process by producing media elements and a final multimedia product for either internet or CD-ROM delivery.
COMA 306 – Electronic Publishing
An advanced look at electronic page layout and publishing. This is a project-based course where students apply skills learned at a previous level to design and produce print publications such as Newsletters, Brochures and Point of Sale material. This course will explore the print processes involve in publication; and will be integrated with COMA 0303, 0301 and 0304. Evaluations will be reflected in the Portfolio of work.
